Apa itu Listening TOEFL & IELTS?
Listening adalah section pertama di TOEFL iBT (28 soal, ~36 menit) dan IELTS (40 soal, 30 menit + 10 menit transfer). Menguji kemampuan memahami percakapan natural berbahasa Inggris dalam konteks akademik dan kehidupan sehari-hari.
5 Tipe Soal Listening
1. Academic Lecture (TOEFL)
- Lecture 4-5 menit dari professor di topik akademik
- Topik: science, history, art, social science
- Soal: main idea, detail, inference, organization
- Kunci: catat key points, transition signal, contoh
2. Campus Conversation (TOEFL)
- Dialog student-professor atau student-staff
- Topik: registrasi, paper deadline, library, housing
- Soal: tujuan dialog, attitude speaker, what next
- Kunci: pahami nada (concerned, confused, satisfied)
3. IELTS Section 1 & 2: Daily Life
- Section 1: dialog 2 orang (booking hotel, info travel)
- Section 2: monolog (museum tour, radio program)
- Soal: form completion, multiple choice, map labeling
- Kunci: predict jawaban dari konteks, eja angka tepat
4. IELTS Section 3 & 4: Academic
- Section 3: diskusi 2-4 orang (group project, tutorial)
- Section 4: lecture monolog akademik panjang
- Soal: matching, short answer, sentence completion
- Kunci: ikuti alur diskusi, tandai disagreements
5. Strategi Note-Taking
- Tulis abreviasi: w/ (with), b/c (because), → (causes)
- Catat noun + verb kunci, bukan kalimat penuh
- Gambar simple diagram untuk hubungan ide
- Latih dengan TED Talks, BBC News, podcasts akademik
Tips Mengerjakan Soal Listening
- Pre-read questions — IELTS kasih waktu baca soal dulu, manfaatkan untuk antisipasi.
- Fokus pada signal words — "However", "but", "actually" sering tanda jawaban.
- Jangan stuck di 1 soal — Audio terus jalan. Lewati, fokus ke soal berikutnya.
- Latih native speed — Dengarkan podcast/news 1.0-1.25x speed setiap hari.
Target skor Listening: TOEFL iBT 25-30 untuk universitas top, IELTS 7.0-7.5 untuk Russell Group. Latihan 30 menit/hari = peningkatan signifikan.
